Color: Building February’s Gray
This gray is the result of my wife, Taffy, and I working together on our own apartment. We needed a restful hue, subtly interacting with the wool carpet, a slightly warmer color on the ceiling, and just the right background for our antique cream shutters. We got there without using black or opaque earth pigments, to preserve the maximum play with changing light. SHOP FEBRUARY'S GRAY | Shop...

Color: Book Jacket Camel
Clothbound books in our home libraries are a rich source of wall colors, often hiding in plain sight. Their patina guides us to the perfect intensities, preventing the often-garish results from commercial paint chips.

Color: Wyatt Green
We were drawn to the seasonal affinity of James Wyatt´s neoclassical ceiling decoration, and how his red loci enlivens his quiet green. It demonstrates that for architectural color, context is crucial, and that colors for decoration flourish with their complements.

Color: Black
Sheen can make a black wall into specular magic. In a flat finish, black evokes a void, but as its sheen increases so does black's special dynamism. Even subtle brush or roller marks, on the painted surface, create scintillating patches of multicolored light.

Color: Chanterelle
Chanterelles exhibit their range of yellows as our vision blends the sensations of red and green. Their glow attracts us to flickers of incandescence on the forest floor.

Color: Marble
This ancient marble's polycrystalline structure allows light to penetrate below its apparent hard surface, and rebound with diffuse reflections that render its rich whites and greiges indefinable.

Color: Fog
We are enveloped by one of nature's wondrous atmospheres when clouds descend to earth as fog. The opposite of foam, where air is trapped by water, fog's mystery results from water encapsulated by air.
Infinitely varying sizes of these captured droplets fracture light into multicolored myriads of gray and inspire our August color.

Color: Utamaro Green
The unique poetry of our July Green is inspired by Utamaro's famous Book of Insects. Created by multiple layers of earth derived inks impressed upon paper made from mulberry bark, the Ukiyo-e book plates draw us into the intimate depth we relish with close-up inspections of summer ground cover.

Color: Aged Celluloid
The Marx Brothers remind us that humor can temper the challenges of decorating. June's color celebrates the aged white subtleties of faded celluloid. Groucho´s apron appears to illuminate the destroyed room, showing that even the monochromatic palette we associate with black and white movies is full of colored light.

Color: Azurite
Azurite from the Villa di Livia's enchanting garden frescos inspired our May blue. In hand grinding this natural earth mineral, the artists produced varying particle sizes and shapes, enhancing the color's depth, and creating the mural's ephemeral atmospheres. To mimic the multicolored resonance of this 1st century process, and compensate for the shallow dimension of current chemically synthesized blue colorants, we have added quantities of red,...

Color: Proust Gray
"I can just barely perceive the neutral glimmer in which the elusive eddying of stirred-up colors is blended…” — Proust, In Search of Lost Time, Vol. 1, Swann’s Way, 46.
Our April color is a neutral that celebrates light with an achromatic value that remains unidentifiable.

Color: Goya Pink
We love how subtle pinks can decorate without being strident. Our March color balances the evanescent violet cast emanating from the ocean at dawn, with the rosier warmth seen in the lustrous dress of Goya's 1788 portrait of Condesa de Altamira. The color's airiness envelops a room's occupants with its light emitting glow.
