The ocean’s froth and Brancusi’s marble volumes achieve depth and nuance from naturally embedded rainbows of multicolored hues. It feels fitting to welcome the New Year by introducing a white that brims with this same glowing potential. SHOP BRANCUSI WHITE | Shop all Colors of the Month

Shells generate pigments and patterns to blend in. We do a similar thing. Whether by aligning with fashions, or balancing architectural proportions, the colors we choose can provide a sense of safety and serenity. Our neutral November hue glows in the light, and comforts in the shade. SHOP SEASHELLS | Shop all Colors of the Month

Sycamore’s bark is especially multicolored. Green, blues and browns are seen as distinct up close, but blend into silver from afar. We often discover a versatile neutral for a room by imagining the result of mixing its diverse hues into the space’s light, and surrounding all its elements with a balanced tonal glow. The delicate fur of baby goats derives its depth from light resonating through individual hairs. Neither light nor dark, red or green, our September white gray places more importance on its achromatic qualities than on its specific saturation or hue. We’re endlessly fascinated by colors summoning non-visual sensations. Our August shaved ice literally cools us down. Our poppy’s orange conjours the garden’s sensuality. When we see a color we also sense the idea of the color; thus their inherent mystery. SHOP ORANGE POPPY | Shop all Colors of the Month

Exterior reds have universal appeal. A former church steeple, reinvented as a barn on a remote Norwegian island, inspires our July color. The building’s historic "Falun Red" reflects a broad spectral depth, and draws our eye around the tower’s perimeter, emphasizing its sculptural presence. We have used a unique range of colorfast exterior pigments to recreate the translucent, light reflecting ability of the original paint’s specially prepared Hermatite...

Café Au Lait is easy to imagine as a color for walls. Our senses often project a fleeting image into the wider arena of decoration for interiors. In fashioning this experience for a room’s atmosphere, we have combined milk white and coffee bean brown to make a color that balances the luminous froth with earthy warmth. Our May green is especially welcome after our long Northeast winter. Its yellow glow generates a lingering "after-image," to winter’s icy blue violet. In future decorating, there may be a similar swing, from cool to warm, with beige and sand replacing our current preoccupation with gray. SHOP SATURATED GREEN | Shop all Colors of the Month

The cartoon sky of Harrison Cody’s Peter Rabbit tin plate is greener than the sky we observe overhead. But it evokes the spring we’re patiently anticipating after this year’s long winter. The warmth of April’s greenish blue has more yellow than the cooler atmosphere of nature’s sky, but contrasted behind the happy antics of Peter’s characters it does signal childhood contentment, another example of color sensations as more than...

The fluid light where ocean and land connect reveals strong shifts between warm and cool colors. We especially love watching how this constant change amplifies the depth of the beaches’ grasses. Our March color formulation mimics the effects of this changing illumination combining warm sandy highlights with cool violet recesses to arrive at the atmospheric depth of our violet gray. This gray is the result of my wife, Taffy, and I working together on our own apartment. We needed a restful hue, subtly interacting with the wool carpet, a slightly warmer color on the ceiling, and just the right background for our antique cream shutters. We got there without using black or opaque earth pigments, to preserve the maximum play with changing light. SHOP FEBRUARY'S GRAY | Shop...
